Southern Tier NY Flyers- 2010 Season - updated 2 15 10

Frequently asked Questions for Players & Parents

In an effort to explain how our organization works, weve collected a list of frequently asked questions from past seasons.

How much does it cost to play?

There is a $ 14.00 AAU membership fee due at Registration. If the player makes a team, the 2010 fees will be based on the team level. The total cost per player will depend on the number of tournaments a team enters. The number of tournaments will be determined by the coach of each team. Here are the guidelines:

·        3 away tournaments and the Flyers tournament will cost players $ 190.00 each

·        4 away tournaments and the Flyers tournament will cost players $ 240.00 each

·        5 away tournaments and the Flyers tournament will cost players $ 290.00 each

·        6 away tournaments and the Flyers tournament will cost players $ 340.00 each

·        7 away tournaments and the Flyers tournament will cost players $ 390.00 each

·         The16 National team will cost players $ 600.00 each

An additional $ 50 fee will be collected in addition to the above fee. The fee is refunded if the parents work ½ day at a club sponsored event.

What does the fee cover?

The fee includes the AAU registration fee, uniform, tournament entry fees, and gym rentals.

What the fees dont cover:

The fee does not cover meals, travel, lodging, and personal costs to attend tournaments.

Will my daughter have to tryout?

Yes. We do our best to place all girls on a team and we will sponsor teams at National (16 and under only), A, and B levels. In past years we had problems with commitment of girls on the C level teams: many did not make the required practices - making it very difficult for coaches to teach and teams to implement offenses plays and defensive sets. In many cases, those teams had a tough time at tournaments.

If there are enough coaches, gym times, and commitment from players, we are usually able to sponsor more than one B level team per age group. If your daughter is not truly committed to making the practices and tournaments, it is not fair to her teammates and volunteer coaches.

Who decides if my daughter makes a team?

The Flyers have assembled groups to watch tryouts and place players. The evaluations are made by: High school coaches, college coaches, former college players, and age group coaches.

Does everyone have to belong to the AAU?

Yes, all players, coaches, and board members, need to register each year with the AAU.

What does belonging to the AAU mean?

Belonging to the AAU allows players to compete in a well-established and governed national body. Most tournaments insist on AAU membership.

AAU membership also allows us to provide insurance to practice sites at an affordable cost.

What type of membership do the girls and coaches get?

We subscribe to the AB membership level. This allows girls to compete in AAU sanctioned tournaments. The membership is good from September 1st through August 31st and must be renewed annually.

Is Fundraising and volunteering required?

Yes, there are two primary requirements:

1.     Players must sell tickets to our spaghetti supper in late March or early April.

2.     Each family must volunteer to work at our annual tournament. Families will pay a $ 50.00 per player fee at registration. The fee will be refunded if they volunteer to work at one of the events.

There is also a third and fee optional fundraising option that offsets the cost to a player and family:

1.     Any player or family may sell advertising space for our tournament program. One-half of the money collected for the ads sold gets refunded to the player who sold it - with a maximum refund of the total players registration fee.

Example: A player playing on a team going to 4 tournaments who sells $ 500.00 worth of ads gets $ 250.00 back; so they essentially play for free.

What is the time commitment for players and coaches?

Most teams practice two times per week. Weekend commitments depend on the team level premier teams will require more weekends the A or B teams. Tryouts start in mid- February and the season runs from early to mid-June for most teams, with our National Team playing into mid July

Can players play other sports?

Yes, but they are still expected to make tournaments and practices.

How is playing time determined and what position will my daughter play?

Playing time for the first three quarters should be distributed fairly. Playing time in the last quarter of a game may be based on many factors including trying to win the game. Position determination will be up to the coach as the make-up of each team is unique. We encourage parents, players, and coaches to talk openly about any concerns over playing time and positions.

Age Determination

Please go to the following site and fill out the information to determine your age group:

Age exceptions are by board approval only. They very rare, but we reserve the right to allow or suggest.

What is a National Team?

Our National Team is the elite team of our organization.  This team competes successfully against others from across the eastern US in showcase tournaments that are scouted by coaches from Division I, II and III colleges and universities.
